As one of South Africa’s largest financial services groups offering a complete range of banking, assurance and wealth management products and services, Absa’s mission is to also be the leading practitioner and thought leader in corporate social investment. Absa strives to be informed by global trends, and to build strength and capabilities through collaborative partnerships. Absa’s aims include improving the quality of, and access to education – particularly among the many rural and disadvantaged communities in South Africa – with a focus on Mathematics, Science and Technology and Early Childhood Development. One of Absa’s flagship projects includes the Beyers Naude Schools Development Programme.

Investments

Kagiso Trust Investments (KTI) was formed in December 1993 by the Kagiso Trust as a vehicle to generate sustainable, long-term financial support (dividends) to Kagiso Trust for purposes of community development and to achieve true economic empowerment through active, operational involvement in underlying strategic investments.

Xstrata

Xstrata is a global diversified mining group listed on both the London and Swiss stock exchanges. The company is in the Top 50 of London’s FTSE 100, and has its corporate headquarters in Zug, Switzerland. In South Africa, Xstrata Alloys headquarters is in Rustenburg, North West. Xstrata Coal South Africa’s head office is in located in Melrose, Johannesburg. Xstrata has meaningful positions in six major international commodity markets: copper, coking coal, thermal coal, ferrochrome, vanadium and zinc, with additional exposures to gold, lead and silver. The company’s operations and projects span five continents and nine countries: Australia, South Africa, Argentina, Canada, Colombia, Germany, Spain, Peru and the UK. Xstrata in addition to committing funds towards the Eric Molobi Scholarship Programme (EMSP) has also offered vacation work to one of the Eric Molobi scholars (Mmbonei Dzimbae).

Remgro

The Remgro Group is a South African investment holding company whose interests now consist of investments in banking and financial services, printing and packaging, motor components, glass products, medical services, mining, petroleum products, food, wine and spirits and various other trademarked products. Remgro strives to be a value adding partner in all its social investment initiatives. The Company’s donation programme focuses primarily on the development of young people from disadvantaged communities to promote their self-esteem. This is done in the belief that such investments will provide sound dividends in the future. During the past year, Remgro has been involved with Kagiso Trust through the Beyers Naude Schools Development Programme.

Tiso Foundation

The Tiso Foundation was founded by the Tiso Group (Pty) Limited as its principal social investment vehicle. The Foundation was conceived at the same time as the formation of the company, in 2001. The founders of the Tiso Foundation understood from the beginning that their vision of wealth creation through the Tiso Group should be anchored on the principle of sharing their success with their communities. The foundation aims to entrench an African institution that has longevity, is sustainable and non-dependent on donor aid. In 2007 the Tiso Foundation committed R3m over a period of four years to the Eric Molobi Scholarship Fund.

First Rand

First Rand represents a very different proposition to its peers in that it is the only fully integrated financial services group in South Africa. It is also the only one of the big-four South African retail, commercial and investment banking groups that is ‘owner-managed’. The Kagiso Trust is one of First Rand’s BEE partners. First Rand and its BEE partners have developed a cooperation agreement specifying how they will work together and gain the full benefits of the empowerment partnership. The First Rand Empowerment Foundation has a mandate for broad-based transformation, and black South African First Rand staff and nonexecutive directors. The Group selected the Kagiso Trust because they share First Rand’s objectives of enhancing broad-based BEE by addressing the needs of a wide constituency.

Dreamfields

The Dreamfields Project uses all the excitement around soccer in South Africa to leverage significant investment in soccer facilities and equipment for township and rural schools. Dreamfields operates in partnership with the Department of Education (who sit on our board) and together have staged a number of tournaments, DreamEvents. These are used to launch schools-based leagues in different communities. Most of Dreamfields’ investment has been outside of metropolitan areas – in smaller provincial towns and in some tiny villages in the deep rural parts of South Africa. Much of its work involves distributing DreamBags – a full set of kit for 15 players including boots and shin pads, as well as balls, pumps, kit for the coach and whistles.
