Sustainable Programmes
Towards Sustainable Programmes
1993 – 2000
In the period leading up to South Africa’s first democratic elections in 1994, the Trust funded voter education initiatives around the country. It also funded health organisations and a national AIDS programme and played a critical role in peacekeeping by funding the National Peace Accord in 1993.
The intention was to identify worthwhile ideas and programmes that could be funded for at least three to four years and, in this way, achieve sustainability and contribute to future community development.
When the political situation began to normalise in the 1990s, Kagiso Trust, building on its experience in the development sector, created a range of integrated business and development services. Kagiso Trust Investments (KTI) was established to generate funds for the Trust and two commercial ventures – Kagiso Trust Enterprises (KTE) and Kagiso Trust Consultancy (KTC) – were created.
Through these pioneering initiatives, Kagiso Trust has become an example of versatility and self-sustainability, demonstrating that non-governmental organisations can grow and flourish while helping to build a better life for the communities they serve.
