As we approach the second quarter of the year, I would like to take this opportunity to wish you a prosperous year ahead that is filled with exciting ventures as well as a bright future for you and your organisations.
As 2012 sets in, Kagiso Trust (KT) continues to broker and encourage support for South Africa’s public education system as education is key to the development and sustainability of South Africa’s economy. As an organisation we hold a strong view that if we want to address inequality, past injustices, as well as build the economy of this country, then we have no option but to ensure that every South African child is provided with an opportunity to access quality education.
Kagiso Trust would therefore like to introduce to you, the Bold Step Campaign which is an initiative aimed at encouraging the nation to take a bold step and get actively involved in changing the face of education in South Africa. Kagiso Trust’s bursary programme made a sizeable impact on higher education in South Africa, having funded more than 25,000 students. Kagiso Trust further contributed R16 million towards the establishment of the Tertiary Education Fund of South Africa (TEFSA), today known as the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS). The campaign therefore seeks to inspire charitable giving by (but not limited to) those who benefited from the bursary programme, in helping to progress the work of the Trust, namely the expansion of the Eric Molobi Scholarship Programme, as well as develop a community that pays tribute to the organization’s history and mission. I would therefore like to encourage you to be on the look-out during the month ahead for communication from KT with regards to further details on how you can get involved.
Kagiso Trust is also very proud to announce a partnership with the University of Johannesburg on ‘Education Conversations.’ The Education Conversations are aimed at encouraging our nation to talk, as well as to create a space for on-going debate and discussion through which diverse voices can be heard. The conversations will focus on what works and how we can, collectively, advance the agenda for an improved public education system. The discussions will focus on collectively advancing South Africa’s public education system by suggesting solutions to its challenges. The KT-UJ partnership will launch the ‘Education Conversation’ series on the 11th April 2012. Details of the launch will soon be included in this issue of In-Brief and we look forward to welcoming you.
With that said, Kagiso Trust looks forward to your continued support in 2012 and we hope that our programmes and partnerships will grow and reach greater heights.

As we wrap and wind the year down, Kagiso Trust is excited to announce the launch of its Annual Report. As part of commemorating Kagiso Trust’s (KT) 25 years in creating sustainable development models towards the transformation of societies, KT will host a celebration event to present its investment plan in education and enterprise development as well as launch its Annual Report.
As we reflect on what we’ve achieved in this time, we also look back on where we have come from and just how far we’ve come. With our history steeped in our unwavering commitment to building sustainable partnerships for poverty eradication, our personnel and our development, operational and empowerment principles are our greatest assets in successfully contributing to the national agenda for growth and a better life for all.
In pursuance of achieving its commitment to social justice processes, KT has come full swing and has repositioned itself from being a donor organisation to a development agency in education and rural enterprise development.
BNSDP School Infrastructure Launch in KwaZulu Natal

On the 6th September 2011, Kagiso Trust officially launched infrastructure at three of the BNSDP schools in KwaZulu Natal. Whilst other schools in the area battle with poor Matric results, Sebenzakusakhanya High School, Phumulani High School (in Nquthu) and Ubongumenzi High Schools in the Glencoe region have flourished over the last few years with the support of Kagiso Trust and certainly have something to celebrate.
It hasn’t always been an easy road. For years, some of the schools battled with relational issues among educators, learner interest in their studies and structurally some of the schools were falling apart. However, thanks to a four year programme initiated by Kagiso Trust, today the schools tell a very different story. Kagiso Trust together with the KwaZulu Natal Department of Education proudly launched infrastructure, including a much needed library, computer centre and science laboratory at each school.

They include the Swedish International Development Agency, Zama Zama, the Rockefeller Foundation, the governments of Finland and France and others. Read more about Our Funders…
Kagiso Trust’s Legacy
The history of Kagiso Trust, formed in 1985 during a period of intense struggle and resistance, mirrors South Africa’s remarkable transition to democracy in the past two decades.
In this time, the Trust became a catalyst for new development institutions and initiatives. Support was spread across a range of sectors: rural and urban struggles, advice centres, welfare and health and, importantly, education. Read more about Our History, Legacy and Sustainable Programmes
